How To Change Name on a Driver’s License in Florida

Recently got married? Legally changed your name through the courts? Been adopted? Or finalized a divorce? Then you need to change your name on your driver’s license, car title and vehicle registration.

We have collected all the necessary information you need to make the process easier, more convenient and less time consuming.

 

Florida Driver’s License

A name change can be done at any driver’s license office along with proper and valid documentation. But before you go to the office, update your information with the Social Security Administration. Give the agency at least 48 hours to process your request.

For Non .U.S. Citizens, you need to change the name in your INS documents before you can change your name in your driver’s license.

 

For U.S. Citizens

 

Proof of Legal Name Change

  • Original driver’s license
  • Renewals or replacements
  • Original or certified copy of your Marriage Certificate
  • A copy of your Divorce certificate
  • A court order indicating the name change

 

Proof of Citizenship or legal residency

  • Valid US passport
  • Certified birth certificate issued by the city, county or state of birth (birth certificates issued in hospitals may not be accepted)
  • Consular report of Birth Abroad
  • Certificate of U.S. Citizenship (N-560)

 

Old license

Replacement fee of $25

*Please note that other documents might be required such as proof of identification, Social Security Number and residential Address may be required for the renewal. So come prepared and have all your documents at the ready.

 

Non U.S. Citizens

 

Proof of legal presence

  • Original Driver License or identification card
  • Canadian Citizens
  • Certificate of naturalization
  • INS Form I-551
  • Permanent resident Card or Resident Alien Card
  • Memorandum of Creation of record of Lawful Permanent Residence
  • Reentry permit
  • Employment Authorization Card

 

Proof of Legal Name Change

  • Original driver’s license
  • Renewals or replacements
  • Original or certified copy of your Marriage Certificate
  • A copy of your Divorce certificate
  • A court order indicating the name change

 

Incorrect or old driver’s license

 

Replacement fee of $25

Car Title

The name on your car title does not have to be updated as the ownership has not been changed. If you wish that your car title reflects your new name, bring the necessary documents to the county tax collector’s office and transfer the title to the new name.

 

Car registration

Complete the certificate of title or registration to transfer the car registration to the correct/new name. If you have changed your name on your driver’s license, your car registration will automatically be updated. So no need to do both.
